What is a 1 minute speech?

A one-minute speech is a short talk on one idea. It's about 110 to 150 words, depending on how fast you speak.

Teachers use one-minute speeches in class to build confidence, and they're a good warm-up for JAM, extempore and interviews.

One minute goes fast. You only have time for one point, one reason and one example.

How to fill one minute

  1. 1

    Take five seconds.

Read the topic, breathe, pick one idea. Don't plan the whole answer.

  2. 2

    Use PREP.

Point, Reason, Example, Point. Say your idea, why, one example, then your idea again.

  3. 3

    Stop at one minute.

Short is fine. A clear close beats a long ramble.

Topic: Why reading matters

Point
Reading is the easiest way to get smarter without noticing.
Reason
Every book lets you borrow someone else's ideas and mistakes, so you learn without living through them.
Example
Last summer I read a story about a girl who started a small business. After that, I ran a stall at our school fair, and I didn't lose money.
Point
That's why reading matters: it quietly changes what you think you can do.

Common one-minute mistakes

  • Picking a topic that's too big.

'Climate change' is a lot for 60 seconds. 'Saving water at home' fits.

  • Learning it word for word.

Forget one line and the rest falls apart. Remember your four PREP steps instead.

  • Speaking too fast.

Nerves make you rush. Slow down; one minute is longer than it feels.

  • Stopping without an ending.

Say your point again to close, even if the minute isn't over.
